The holidays are upon us, and I’ve been thinking for my next trip I’d like to go someplace that really pours on the Christmas spirit, Norman Rockwell style. I’m limiting myself to a 300 to 500 mile radius from New York, so it would likely have to be in the Northeast. Anyone have suggestions? There has to be a small town somewhere renowned for its Christmas celebrations, and I’d like to experience that if I could. I’m talking horse sleighs, Christmas carols, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, silver bells, and a partridge in a pear tree.
Mistletoes would be a bonus too.
It’s been a long, long time since Christmas felt like Christmas to me, and I’d like to recapture the joy and happiness I once felt for this time of year again.
Hopefully it won’t turn out like a Clark Griswold kind of Christmas vacation either.
Can’t afford the drive right now. And no, I am not flying.

Check Maryland, might be something here worth checking out. We do have a famous street that’s known for all the houses having christmas decorations and such.
If you do head down this way give me a holla, we can hang out.

Well Boston once banned Christmas so there might be an affinity there with familial Scrooginess.
OMgosh, Stockbridge, Norman Rockwell, the whole bit. check it out. http://bit.ly/1ltLIn (looks like a winner)
But there is your beloved liberal Vermont too–very beautiful http://bit.ly/3qTjrp

Norman Rockwell museum in Stockbridge–ooh an old fashioned Christmas! Just remember to order your tickets and take note of the dates if you decide on this one! Dec 5 & 6–right around the corner.
Stockbridge looks perfect, ironically enough I had driven through the town on my way to Vermont too. Unfortunately their festival doesn’t fall on one of my extended weekends off (I get a four day weekend every other week), but on the upside, it might be less crowded if I go the week after.
I’ll have to do some research this weekend. There might be a way for me to swing this if I play my cards right…
I’ll save Maryland for a possible spring trip by the way, or as a waypoint on my way to DC and beyond.

Good on Stockbridge. Looked like it fit the bill. Well, the N. Rockewell museum will still be there. Maybe they’ll even have sleigh rides the week before Christmas..hope it works out.

Santa’s Village, Jefferson NH. It’s X-mas all year!
@Tom: Maryland is still hundred times better than Delaware. Man, I couldn’t drive through THAT state fast enough.
@RovingPoet: I may be able to move around my work days to get some extra time off for that weekend. I have to see, the famous Red Lion Inn is already booked up there, so I’d have to stay elsewhere, maybe a bed and breakfast. As far as New England Christmas villages go, it does seem hard to top Stockbridge.
@TJSharky: I definitely want to visit NH, but Mommy would get upset about me driving that far in the snow. And Lord knows I can’t worry my Mommy too much.
