A Bully of a Childhood

Lincoln Adams | July 1, 2008 @ 9:00 am

One of those “Are you &^%$ing kidding me??” stories for the day:

“A heated debate raged in the Swedish blogosphere on Monday after an eight-year-old boy’s failure to invite two classmates to his birthday party resulted in a complaint filed with parliament.

The policy at the boy’s school in the southern town of Lund was that all children (or all the boys or all the girls) had to be invited to parties when their invitations were handed out in class.

When a teacher noticed that two children had been left out of a party list, she promptly confiscated all the invitations, according to Sydsvenskan.”

I’m so glad my tender self wasn’t living in Sweden during my grade school years. Considering the ratio of bullies-to-friends back in those days was like 50 to 1, my righteous butt-cheeks would have been stomped by 100 bullies right in my own home.

Actually, something like that did happen anyway, one hot summer afternoon when for some reason I was being chased by about 20 angry kids. I pedaled home furiously and managed to make it into my backyard, but they followed me in anyway. We had a pool, and when they saw my parents weren’t responding even though I was screaming at the top of my lungs for help, they decided to toss me in.

This was after my parents had drained the pool of all water too.

So I ended up lying there in the sand for a while, moaning and groaning and wondering why my life sucked so bad.

Ahhhh, memories. :D

You Got Your Personality Meme

Lincoln Adams | December 19, 2007 @ 11:21 am

I recently got tagged by the T at Spilt Milk for a Birthday Personality Meme.

Well it’s easy enough to do: simply pick your birthday month and then bold the character traits that accurately describe you. Here’s mine:

Loves to joke. Attractive. Suave and caring. Brave and fearless. Firm and has leadership qualities. Knows how to console others. Too generous and egoistic. Takes high pride in oneself. Thirsty for praises. Extraordinary spirit. Easily angered. Angry when provoked. Easily jealous. Observant. Careful and cautious. Thinks quickly. Independent thoughts. Loves to lead and to be led. Loves to dream. Talented in the arts, music and defense. Sensitive but not petty. Poor resistance against illnesses. Learns to relax. Hasty and trusty. Romantic. Loving and caring. Loves to make friends.

Note, I highlighted “brave” but not fearless, since bravery doesn’t require being fearless, and I’m always askeered of something. :wideeyed:

If you want to join in, here are the guidelines:

  • Mention the person who tagged you and create a link back to them.
  • Copy-paste the traits for all the twelve months (see below).
  • Pick your month of birth (see below).
  • Highlight the traits that apply to you.
  • Tag 12 people and let them know by visiting their blogs and leaving a comment.
  • Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve done it!

My Gamble With a Casino

Lincoln Adams | June 24, 2007 @ 7:13 pm

Some time ago my folks and I decided to celebrate my last birthday by taking a trip to the casinos. We had a coupon for an all you can eat buffet, so I was immediately sold on the idea. :D

I had never been to a casino before, being the kind of guy who didn’t see the logic in having my money so quickly liberated by a gang of mob-like casino runners, but this time my curiosity won out. The place we were going to was a huge complex consisting of a mall, an indoor stadium, a luxury hotel, and of course, the casino itself. When we walked in I was visually assaulted by bright lights everywhere, in all different shades of shiny colors that thrilled me.

“Wow, the colors, the colors! I gotta take a pic of this!” *Click*

Next thing I knew I was surrounded by three security guards.

“uh….”

“Excuse me sir, you’re not allowed to take pictures here.”

I managed to stutter out an apology, thinking for sure I was now going to get my head bounced off the cement, but they were pretty nice about it, checking my camera to make sure I wasn’t scoping the territory, then finally letting me go with just a warning. I quickly put my camera away and briskly walked to a different section (just in case they were having second thoughts), where I tried my hand at a few slot machines. 5 minutes in I was beginning to realize how much I really hated gambling. I had two coupons worth 20 dollars that I could use to gamble and promptly lost it all in under 45 seconds. After that I was pretty much tapped out, refusing to spend another dime on this accursed place.

It occurred to me though that when you’re not willing to spend money at a casino, there isn’t much else you can do, except maybe stare at the pretty lights some more. I finally gave up and hit the restaurant, where the food was simply excellent, much to my relief. I sampled foods with weird sounding names and polished it all off with a HUGE waffle cone of creamy chocolate ice cream. Yeah yeah, I may be getting up there in years, but I still refuse to grow up.

Despite the vast size of the casino complex, once the eating was done, there really wasn’t much else to do, so not surprisingly I quickly got bored out of my mind. I decided to call it a day and went back to the terminal to wait for my bus to arrive, where I ran into a thick wall of cigarette smoke coming from chain smokers who were also waiting for their buses. I swear, I’ve never seen so many cigars and cigarettes in my life. EVERYBODY was smoking up a storm. I guess for them it was a way of taking their minds off the thousands of dollars they just blew by saying “hit me” one time too many in Blackjack.

Honestly, these gamblers creeped me out. The zombie looks on their faces as they continued to pour coins into slot machines, their horrific reaction to seeing the wheel go just a few numbers past the one they bet on, the wringing of hands for being dealt awful cards in Texas Hold ‘Em, and so on. Maybe I’m weird, but I don’t consider this my idea of fun.

The bus finally came, and I leapt up the stairs with a nod to the driver and a short request:

“Get us the hell outta here.”

The complex soon shrank into the background, almost sinking into the earth as I glanced back one last time and thought to myself: “Never again.”

A Flowery Beginning?

Lincoln Adams | April 16, 2007 @ 1:00 am

It was Uptown Girl’s birthday recently, so I decided to surprise her by having flowers delivered to her doorstep. I wanted to show her I was sincerely interested in her, and I admit I was kinda hoping the flowers would tug at her heart strings a little more too.

I got several text messages from her when she got them, so that’s encouraging. Nothing about me of course is normal, and if I hadn’t told her I was hearing impaired and hated using the phone, I’m sure she would have called instead. Trying to generate something solely via email with someone who is not much of an Internet person to begin with is, to put it mildly, a bit frustrating. Especially when that someone is so busy at times she barely has time to herself, let alone the time to email someone. I was going to have to call her in order to sustain things

I knew I was going to have to go out into the real world if I wanted to get somewhere with her, and even though she was understanding and was willing to take things slow, I couldn’t string her along forever.

So I began the process of improving my hygiene and my health. My experience so far though tells me this was not going to be a walk in the park for me. First I went out and bought some anti-acne facial wash to clean up my face a little. The net result was no change in my acne, but my lips began to shrivel up like I had swallowed a pound of alum. Even a week after I stopped using the wash my lips were still parched and crusty. I also had dried skin on my nose that still wouldn’t go away after applying several cans of vitamin E and aloe vera cream on it, a body wash whose pleasant odor dissipated five seconds after I got out of the shower, deodorant that gave my armpits rashes even though they contained “all natural” ingredients, nose and ear hair that even a weed whacker would have problems gutting, and perpetually sweaty palms that drive me so crazy I’m considering using a blow torch to keep them dry.

Cripes this was hard. It was like my own body was furiously plotting against me, determined to ensure I’d live out the rest of my days as an unwed hermit. Compounding things even more was the fact that I haven’t had a decent wardrobe in years, partly due to wearing a uniform on my job (thus vacating the need for any dressy attire) and my Homer Simpson shaped figure.

No wonder I’m so afraid to step outside the door. And now I have this beautiful and accomplished woman that I’ve somehow managed to get the attention of, but because my stupid ass wasn’t willing to wait and get my body under control first before I started seeding dating profiles halfway around the galaxy, I now have to deal with the possibility that I will completely humiliate myself and ruin my chances with a rare and decent girl, the likes of whom may come only once in this lifetime.

For whatever reason, I seem to be continuously pitted against insurmountable odds in my quest for a life (and some smoochies…. ok lots of smoochies). I can either toss in the towel and decide this is a war I can never win, or take it head on, Rocky style.

And I think if I do go down for the count, then I should at least go down swinging.
